An Interview with Draplin Design Co.
Posted: Nov 21, 2007
Check out this wonderful interview with one of my design heroes – Aaron Draplin of Portland’s own Draplin Design Co.
This quote on the extra trinkets he throws in with merch orders is what, for me at least, sealed the deal on his status as a true gentleman:
There was a time when you’d buy a tractor in the Midwest, and leave with a hat, memo book and a couple pencils. This little transaction served a number of purposes. First, and most importantly, the farmer could use these things in his day-to-day life. Second, the proprietor’s name was out in the world that much more. Third, the gesture of a couple freebies to “seal the deal” is a time-honored tradition that is being phased out by stricter and stricter marketing budgets. The simplicity of these often-overlooked items and gesture is something that is very endearing to me.
I just bought a hat from Aaron, and in the package was a couple of Field Notes books (which are absolutely beautiful, by the way), some little DDC cards, some pencils, a pencil sharpener and a wooden ruler. Made my day.

6 months in and all's swell

So today is our six-month wedding anniversary, and boy does the time fly…
This marriage malarkey has been quite fun so far, so I figured I best write a little something here to remind myself not to forget the real deal in six month’s time.
Happy anniversary, Samara. Here’s to the rest of ‘em.
Ouch, ouch, ouch...

A few weeks ago Samara’s mom Lorraine invited me to join her for her weekly yoga practice at the Open Door Yoga Studio here in Raleigh and, having wanted to give yoga another try, I gratefully accepted.
Given that the last time I practised any form of yoga was probably 15 years ago, I figured I’d ease myself back into it with a hatha class called Simple Yoga which I really enjoyed. After a few sessions of that Lorraine asked if I’d like to try the Bikram class, and I had my first class yesterday.
I’d read through Bikram’s book a bunch of times, but putting yourself through the actual class is something else entirely. I can’t remember the last time I pushed my body through something so hard. Hitting the gym? Running? Cycling? All of that was a piece of cake compared to Bikram.
The heat got to me a few times so I had to sit out a few of the poses, and my hamstrings and hips are ridiculously tight these days so I’m about as flexible as a board, but it still felt absolutely amazing to push myself through the discomfort I felt moving my body in the way the poses dictate.
After the 90 minute class I felt exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. A long soak in an epsom salt bath last night seemingly didn’t do much to cure my aches and pains because today I hurt everywhere, but you better believe I’ll be clearing room in my schedule to practice Bikram three times a week from now on.
Here’s to getting back into the best shape of my life. Wish me luck—my knackered old bones are gonna need it.
Pixeljuicer invited to Behance Network
Posted: Nov 02, 2007
I’ve been a fan of the Behance Network for a while now – the Think Tank especially – so it was awesome to wake up this morning to an email from Scott saying that they liked my portfolio and wanted me to join the network.
My portfolio page will be displayed here when I’m done adding my work to it.
Thanks for the invitation guys, much appreciated!
