Noisy neighbors

So, apparently, a local who needed to get rid of some live mortar shells decided that the best place to do that would be the local scrap metal depot.
Genius bit of thinking there, Curly.
From where I’m sitting in my kitchen, which isn’t all that close to said depot, the explosions that happen whenever the Army detonate another one of these things is strong enough to rattle the windows.
I’d hate to be living next door to the thing. I’ve had to put up with noisy neighbors before but this is ridiculous.
Ouch, ouch, ouch...

A few weeks ago Samara’s mom Lorraine invited me to join her for her weekly yoga practice at the Open Door Yoga Studio here in Raleigh and, having wanted to give yoga another try, I gratefully accepted.
Given that the last time I practised any form of yoga was probably 15 years ago, I figured I’d ease myself back into it with a hatha class called Simple Yoga which I really enjoyed. After a few sessions of that Lorraine asked if I’d like to try the Bikram class, and I had my first class yesterday.
I’d read through Bikram’s book a bunch of times, but putting yourself through the actual class is something else entirely. I can’t remember the last time I pushed my body through something so hard. Hitting the gym? Running? Cycling? All of that was a piece of cake compared to Bikram.
The heat got to me a few times so I had to sit out a few of the poses, and my hamstrings and hips are ridiculously tight these days so I’m about as flexible as a board, but it still felt absolutely amazing to push myself through the discomfort I felt moving my body in the way the poses dictate.
After the 90 minute class I felt exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. A long soak in an epsom salt bath last night seemingly didn’t do much to cure my aches and pains because today I hurt everywhere, but you better believe I’ll be clearing room in my schedule to practice Bikram three times a week from now on.
Here’s to getting back into the best shape of my life. Wish me luck—my knackered old bones are gonna need it.

Yesterday we took Hank to get checked out by the vet. Seeing as we picked him up after spending almost week in the shelter we were worried that he may have been left to roam the streets because he had heartworms or some other nasties.
He does have a bit of a respitory infection, but everything else checked out fine. His joints are fine, he’s free of heartworms, his teeth and gums are good and he’s not overweight.
Turns out he’s happiest when I work on the couch and he flops down in front of VH1 Classic.
He’s a ridiculously mellow, healthy, temporarily snotty pooch who loves classic rock. Rad.
This concludes our Hank programming on partiallyblind.com for the forseeable. I’ve already gone into “new dad” mode – no point in dragging it onto here too. There’ll most likely be good few pictures on my Flickr stream though.
Hello Hank

I’ve been a huge movie nerd for as long as I can remember, and for pretty much the same amount of time, I’ve wanted to own a basset hound.
I spent a good few hours this past weekend looking at various local pet adoption websites in the hopes of finding a four-legged critter to bring home. Lots of awww-ing at some ridiculously cute dogs later, I eventually stumbled upon a listing from the Rocky Mount Animal Control centre for a sweet little 2 year old basset who goes by the name of Movie.
Basset hounds + movies. It’s like fate. Sweet, slobbery, stinky fate.
I exchanged a few emails with them this morning and he was still available, so Samara left work early and we drove over to Rocky Mount to meet him and hopefully bring him home with us.
Movie was just the name they gave him to list him, but that’s a little silly and he totally doesn’t answer to it. He seems to be real happy with Hank, so Hank he shall be from now on.
I’ve bored family and friends alike with my dreams of owning an old pickup truck and driving around town with my hound while we both howl away to Johnny Cash records, so I’m ridiculously excited right now.
Say hello to my little friend. Come on, Hank, sing that song.
There’s a few more pictures on Flickr if you’re interested.
Congratulations Angela and Brian!

Today is the wedding day for two friends of ours here in Raleigh, Angela and Brian.
They’re both great people who’ve both been good friends to me since I started visiting Raleigh, and they were awesome to have around during our wedding too. Hope it goes off without a hitch and you two have an amazing time, and a happy future together.
Congrats, guys!
Boy, sure is hot, Jimbo

One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most since I moved over to the sunny climes of North Carolina is the change in climate. Apocalyptic weather over Britain this summer aside, it’s been nice to live somewhere where there are noticably different seasons.
It’s been a hot week here in Raleigh, but today is something else for a scrawny fair-skinned Welsh boy such as myself, and I’m absolutely loving it. So far at least. I may change my mind after a few more weeks of it.

Congratulations to my good friend Jayme Hicks who’s just been voted “Best Real Estate Agent” in the Indy’s Best of the Triangle awards for 2007.
If you’re thinking of buying a propery in the Triangle you should definitely give her a call.
Well done, Jayme!
