Innit

Kottke posted a remainder entry describing one of the things I was happy to leave behind in the UK when I moved to the US – the bloody awful contraction “innit”.
America, I implore you. You may have been stupid enough to create Nascar, televangelists, George Bush and Hot Pockets, but for the love of god, do the decent thing and don’t start using this phrase.
Please.
For me.

So long, Arthur
Posted: Mar 19, 2008
Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who co-wrote “2001: A Space Odyssey” and won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday, an aide said. He was 90. (Link)
I grew up pretty much obsessed with Arthur C. Clarke.
I read everything he wrote that I could get my hands on, I spent hours on the floor in front of the television watching Mysterious World and World of Strange Powers, and to this day I can’t see a crystal skull without it reminding me of him. Later I became equally obsessed about Stanley Kubrick via 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The world today would be a very different place without him having lived in it, and I for one thank him for being there for me when I desperately needed an escape from the life I was living.
Rest easy, Arthur. And thanks.
This is not the blog you're looking for...

Greetings to those of you who found your way here, most likely after reading yesterday’s New York Times piece on my namesake, Josh Marshall.
I’m one of the other Josh Marshall’s of this world, and while I share the same political leanings as my more famous namesake, I’m not the recipient of a George Polk Award.
Around these parts we mostly waffle about nerdy stuff, my dog Hank and about life in Raleigh, but it’s good to have you here all the same.
Go Giants!

So tonight was the first Superbowl I’ve ever watched as a resident of the USA, and goddamn, how awesome were the last few minutes of that game?
I’m not a huge fan of the Patriots or the Giants, to be honest – basketball is still way more my thing (go Sonics!), but I was half-heartedly rooting for the Patriots just so they could have the perfect season. That said, the Giants killed it in the fourth quarter.
Eli Manning, you deserve every bit of praise that’s showered on you for the next l’il while. Outstanding.
Thirty Four

Crikey, we’re half way through January already. Happy 2008!
Yesterday was my thirty-fourth birthday, and much merriment was had. Drunken ghetto bowling is the new black, I’m tellin’ ya. I finally got my swash buckle too! Thanks to everyone who came out – it was a blast.
This year is already shaping up to be busy as shit. A ton of work is in the pipeline, I should be getting my fixed gear any time now, and my immigration paperwork should be dealt with in just a few more weeks. All the endless things I’ve had to put off due to not having a Social Security Number will have to be taken care of, but it’ll be so great to actually be able to cross all of that stuff off my to-do list.
2008 is gonna be a great one for me, I reckon. Lots of exciting stuff is lining up that I’m super excited about (more about that later) and, hopefully, I’ll get around to documenting stuff a little better around here too.
See you around, kids. Here’s my favorite song by far from Radiohead’s new years webcast, for no other reason than me having a thing for drum machines
