America, I implore you. You may have been stupid enough to create Nascar, televangelists, George Bush and Hot Pockets, but for the love of god, do the decent thing and don’t start using this phrase.

I’ve been a huge fan of Yugo Nakamura since the days of Flash 4, and I still have a soft spot for the Clock Blocks screensaver he made back in 2001.

Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who co-wrote “2001: A Space Odyssey” and won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday, an aide said. He was 90. (Link)

I grew up pretty much obsessed with Arthur C. Clarke.

I read everything he wrote that I could get my hands on, I spent hours on the floor in front of the television watching Mysterious World and World of Strange Powers, and to this day I can’t see a crystal skull without it reminding me of him. Later I became equally obsessed about Stanley Kubrick via 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The world today would be a very different place without him having lived in it, and I for one thank him for being there for me when I desperately needed an escape from the life I was living.

Rest easy, Arthur. And thanks.
